10-Year-Old Alabama Girl Found Dead; Another Child Charged with Murder
CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. — A 10-year-old girl was found dead under what authorities are describing as “mysterious” circumstances, with another juvenile now facing a murder charge, police said.
Katheryn Bigbee’s body was discovered Friday night after officers with the Piedmont Police Department responded to a missing juvenile report just before 11 p.m. at an undisclosed location.
“As a result of the investigation, another juvenile has been taken into custody and charged with murder,” Police Chief Nathan Johnson said in a statement.
Authorities have not released key details surrounding the case, including whose home the child was found in, what led to her death, or the circumstances connecting the two juveniles. It also remains unclear which child was initially reported missing, prompting the police response.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, with limited information being made public due to the ages of those involved.
“This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved and for our entire community,” Johnson said.
Katheryn was a student at Piedmont Elementary School, where staff and classmates are mourning her loss. In a statement, the school remembered her as a joyful and spirited child with a love for reading.
“We are heartbroken to share the loss of one of our precious students, Katheryn Bigbee,” the school said. “Our entire school family is grieving as we remember a sweet little girl who brought smiles, kindness, and a bright light to our halls each day.”
School officials asked the community to keep Katheryn’s family in their thoughts, adding that her memory will live on among those who knew and loved her.
