Jamie‑Lea Biscoe was found by her father in a bedroom of the property on 10 April with what Essex Coroner’s Court described as “serious, traumatic injuries to her neck”. The wounds were suspected to have been inflicted by the family dog.
During the brief hearing, Senior Coroner for Essex, Lincoln Brookes, confirmed that Essex Police had asked for the inquest to be suspended while detectives continue their investigation. Granting the request, he described the teenager’s death as a “truly tragic loss of life” and offered his condolences to her family.
The court heard that paramedics were called to Long Hide, the family’s road, but despite their efforts Jamie‑Lea could not be saved. A post‑mortem examination later confirmed that she died as a result of the neck injuries.
Police seized the dog, believed to be a lurcher‑cross, and tests are being carried out to determine its precise breed.
The inquest will resume once the police investigation has concluded.
Jamie‑Lea’s father, Jack, has since spoken publicly about the moments he found his daughter.
He told The Sun that he discovered her slumped on the floor with a bite wound to her neck.
He said he was also attacked during the incident, suffering puncture wounds to his arm and having part of his ear bitten off.
Jack said he pleaded with officers to have the family’s dog a female blue‑merle lurcher‑cross named Shy put down immediately.
“I just said to them, ‘please just put her down’. I don’t want to see her ever again… I just don’t think that dog should live anymore,” he said.
The family’s other dogs Bella and Mouse Shy’s 18-month-old pups are not thought to have been involved in the attack which killed Jamie-Lea.
Jack is also calling for them to be destroyed as he believes they have “seen too much”.
He continued: “My daughter was not killed by an XL Bully, she was killed by a genuine family dog.
“I thought I could trust that dog with my life and it took my daughter’s life. She was my daughter’s best friend and she still killed her.
“I lost my entire life that night when my daughter was murdered by another member of my family.
“Witnessing the horror and destruction it has caused me, it’s not worth it. Treat them as dogs, give them their beds, be careful.”
Jack was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control and causing injury resulting in death but was released on bail.
