A 36-year-old woman was found dead alongside her boyfriend in an apparent murder-suicide at a Fleming Island apartment complex Saturday, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies were called April 18 to an apartment on County Road 220 after a family member of 34-year-old Ashtin Durham contacted authorities about a disturbing message they received from him, according to the Sheriff’s Office. After deputies were unable to reach anyone inside, they entered the unit and found Durham and 36-year-old Jessica Valentin-Rivera dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
A firearm and shell casings were found in the apartment and collected as evidence, investigators said. The Sheriff’s Office said preliminary findings indicate the incident may be a domestic-related murder-suicide, but emphasized the investigation is ongoing.
Deputies said both Durham and Valentin-Rivera had children, but none together. The children were not in the home at the time of the shooting and are safe with relatives, according to investigators. Anyone with information is asked to call the Clay County Sheriff’s Office
